A Brief Story of Tokyo Revenger
The story of Tokyo Revengers is one of those that start from a ridiculous premise but keep one foot in reality.
The protagonist is Takemichi Hanagaki, a young adult whose routine consists of working in a DVD store and returning to his tiny apartment in life without much of a future.
One fine day, while watching the news, Takemichi hears the news about the death of Hinata Tachibana and his younger brother Naoto Tachibana.
Here comes a memory from his past: Hinata is none other than his high school sweetheart, the only person he ever loved in his life. And now she was dead.
Shaken by the news, Takemichi goes on with his life as a proletarian when, out of nowhere, someone pushes him off the train platform, and he falls onto the tracks, about to be run over.
When he opens his eyes, as if by magic, he is no longer in front of a moving train, but 12 years ago at his school, together with his old friends.
The shock of the time travel was not greater than seeing his reflection as a young man: the Takemichi of the past was quite different, sporting wild, bleached hair and participating in a small gang, but his life changed forever when a much larger gang beat his group.
As he returns to the past, Takemichi realizes that he now has a unique possibility on his hands: it may be possible to prevent Hinata’s death in the future.
With some help from fate (and the script), he meets his girlfriend’s younger brother, Naoto, and tells him about time travel and how Hinata would die.
Just as the two greet each other, promising to take care of the girl, a light dazzles everyone, and Takemichi returns to the present, surviving the fall onto the train tracks. This is when his life changes radically.
The boy is welcomed exactly by Naoto, who in this new present has not died thanks to the warning given by Takemichi in his time travel.
But not everything is a celebration, for Hinata was unable to escape his fate and still died. Fortunately, our protagonist will have a new opportunity: with the help of Naoto, now a police investigator.
Takemichi discovers a way to travel 12 years into the past again to prevent the Manji gang, responsible for her death in the present, from becoming more powerful.
His first objective is to prevent “Mikey,” the gang president, from meeting someone.
With this premise in hand, we follow Takemichi’s teenage life trying to prevent Hinata’s death while at the same time getting to know the structure of the Manji gang and all the mysteries related to the mysterious president of the group.
