Cactus have some morphological alterations that allow them to live in adverse conditions that affect their leaves and stems. Their leaves are reduced to thorns or “hairs” of various shapes and colors.
They have different functions: they reduce the surface of evapotranspiration, capture water from dew by condensation, act as a screen against the sun’s rays, and protect the cactus from herbivorous animals.
On the other hand, it presents stems with very variable measures and geometric forms. They have vertical thickening, which allows them to make contractions and expansions by admission or detriment of water.
In general, Cactus and Cactaceae are composed of an areola from which sprout thorns, flowers, hairs, and leaves. The stem can be cylindrical with upward growth, rounded, with a spherical zone, or cladodium, with flattened aspects.
Although the flowers are not very durable, they call much attention. They are solitary and hermaphrodite. They give them the property of self-pollination by themselves because they have female and male organs in them.
They produce small fruit, from two to four centimeters, with ten seeds that can be used for reproduction, depending on the variety.
After the first flowering, every year, the flowers reappear at the same time. The flowers are generally huge and typically arranged in a spiral, in variable numbers. Some species produce edible fruits like the Opuntia Ficus cactus (known as the Indian fig).
Some cacti can live up to 200 years and reach up to 20 meters in height. There are also mini cactuses, of which the smallest is known as Blosfeldia lilliputian – from the Bolivian Andes – with only 0.5 centimeters in diameter.
Just like a standard silver, the cactus needs water: If you are one of those who have cactus at home, you should be well informed on how to take care of them.
When they are in the desert, they generate a mechanism in which they absorb as much liquid as possible to withstand long heat hours.
Also, it is a great help for the different species of animals and other plants that live in the deserts in the food chain.
There are small cactus species, which we can have in pots and place anywhere in the house, even on the bedside table in our room or on the bathroom counter.
