Characteristic of Durian

Nature is wise and has focused on making these foods look good on the outside and inside, so we find them attractive and eat them with pleasure to benefit from all their nutrients.

But nature forgot to make one of all its fruits attractive. I am referring to the Durian, the stinkiest fruit in the world.

If the fruit is stinky, the last thing people want to do is eat it; we don’t even want to have it near us!

We will not be able to eat smelly or bad-looking food because our instinct will tell us that it is dangerous for our health and that we may be putting ourselves in danger.

In this family, we can find hibiscus, cotton, and okra. Depending on the species, the durian tree can reach 25 to 50 meters in height.

Its leaves are long-lasting, with an opposite growth, with an elliptical and, at the same time, square shape, measuring approximately 10 to 18 centimeters in length.

Durian flowers reproduce in clusters of 3 to 30 on long branches and trunks. Each flower has a calyx and about five petals, and very rarely, there are four or six.

The Durian is a tree that can bloom once or twice, and its fruit harvest is annual. It can vary depending on the species, the locality, and also crop.

This tree can retain its fruit for four or five years. The fruit hangs from the mature branches for three months after pollination occurs.

Thirty species of Durian trees have been recognized. They are all native to Southeast Asia, and of these, at least nine have edible fruit.

However, there are many species whose fruit has not been collected and examined, so there may be other species that have edible fruit.

Native to Malaysia, Indonesia, and Borneo, it is cultivated throughout Southeast Asia, with Thailand being the most significant international exporter.

The bad smell of Durian is hard to describe. Some say it smells like garbage or rotten onions, to the point that many people can only eat it if they hold their noses.

In Thailand, Japan, and Hong Kong, there are signs prohibiting its consumption in hotels or public transport because its bad smell lingers for hours.

Despite this, it is widely consumed in many different ways. In the photo above, we can see it in the form of a cake called durian mochi, for sale on Amazon.

It is eaten, of course, raw and in the form of potato chips. Its seed is also consumed roasted. If it smells so bad, why do people eat it?

It has a texture similar to avocado and an aggressive flavor that is a delicacy and, for many, abominable. But the most important thing is that nutritionally it is a treasure.

It provides iron, vitamin C, potassium, folic acid, zinc, niacin, B6, vitamin A, riboflavin, thiamin, and calcium. It has antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties. It is full of dietary fiber, is good for the skin, and lowers blood pressure.
