A Brief Story of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles story is now part of popular culture, and anyone who hasn’t spent the ’90s at the bottom of a cave knows it.

Four mutant turtles, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael, live in the sewers and receive intensive instruction from their master, Splinter, a rat expert in martial arts.

No matter if their smiling green balls appeared on a movie poster, in the toy section of a supermarket, or on a PEZ tube, you couldn’t miss them.

But if they are known to everyone, and this week they are once again on the cinema screens, their origins are nevertheless very modest.

In parallel to their success on the small screen, the four ninjas with shells are also successful in the cinema: a first feature film was released in 1990, darker than the animated series, and natural shots.

The turtles are embodied by actors wearing animatronic costumes created by Jim Henson (the father of Muppets).

The first film’s success led to two sequels, lighter and funnier than the comics, released in 1991 and 1992, respectively.

Heroes in shells lost momentum in the 2000s, after the end of the first animated series and the release of the last comic books. A “live” series (at the end of the 90s) did not succeed in reviving public interest.

It will be followed by a second animated series (from 2003 to 2009), darker than the first one, the animated feature film TMNT released in theatres in 2007, and the third series in computer-generated images in 2012, when the firm Nickelodeon buys the four turtles.

The success of the series brings young viewers back together around the ninjas in shell, and a new line of toys is launched. Two years later, the Ninja Turtles make their big comeback in a family blockbuster signed by Jonathan Liebesman and produced by Michael Bay.

A new era, new techniques: the years have passed, and if the four turtles are now made in performance-capture and 3D, they have lost nothing of their humor and their ardor to defend the streets of New York. More than ever resounds in 2014, their legendary “Cowabunga!”
