What Is Star?
A star is a huge and luminous ball of plasma bound by its gravity, whose diameter and density are such that the central region, the core, reaches the temperature necessary to initiate nuclear fusion reactions, i.e., several million degrees.
These thermonuclear reactions release luminous energy that opposes the star’s contraction under its gravity. It is on the main sequence of the so-called Hertzsprung-Russell diagram.
The closest star to the Earth is the Sun, a yellow dwarf star. It is a fairly ordinary star, with a mass of about 1030 kg.
Its diameter is about one and a half million kilometers, modest compared to some stars, such as Antares or Betelgeuse, which have hundreds of times the greater diameter.
As a star evolves, especially when it leaves the main sequence to become a red giant, its diameter is not constant. It can also vary regularly for periodic variable stars, like RR Lyrae and Cepheids.
