Amphibians can live both in and out of water. However, their skin needs to be consistently moist, as it functions as a means of breathing for this animal.
Although almost all of this class have lungs, they are of straightforward structure. Both frogs and toads have ears and a heart of superior complexity when compared to their ancestors.
The amphibious life form, considered quite adaptable, has been evolving for thousands of years due to its ability to inhabit most continents of the world, except Antarctica, which has exceptionally harsh climatic conditions for almost any kind of life.
They have nocturnal habits, and males are known to croak during the reproductive season. The frogs’ skin is thin and porous, and therefore these animals are susceptible to changes in both the aquatic environment and the soil and air.
Besides, breathing in the anurans is performed partly through the skin and partly through the lungs, and the skin is also essential for water absorption, as these animals do not drink water.
Frogs’ diet is composed of insects such as flies (adults and larvae), cockroaches, mosquitoes, ants, aphids, beetles, caterpillars and fireflies, and other invertebrate animals such as spiders, slugs, and worms.
Toads do not have sharp teeth, only fragile serrated, and therefore do not bite or chew the animals that make up their diet. They use their tongue, which is elastic (fixed to the front of the mouth in most species), to capture their potential prey.
When the frog sees the prey, it approaches or waits for the insect to be at a distance sufficient for its tongue to reach the food. Then, the frog projects its body and launches its tongue, which has a sticky tip so that the insect gets stuck.
Then the frog retracts its tongue, pulls the insect into its mouth, and swallows it whole, without chewing.
This class of vertebrate animals, composed of frogs, water salamanders, and Cecilia, was the first to appear on planet earth around 300 million years ago.
Today, inhabiting some Indonesian islands, there are still rare and ancient specimens that lived in the Coal Age, a period when these animals were the dominant group.
