Monogatari is an anime series based on the novels written by Nisioisin (Nishio Ishin). The animation studio Shaft produced the series under the direction of Akiyuki Shinbo.
The Monogatari series centers on Koyomi Araragi, a third-year high school student who is now almost human after having been a vampire for a while.
Synopsis of Monogatari Series
One day, a classmate named Hitagi Senjōgahara, who never talks to anyone, falls from a tall ladder into Koyomi’s arms. He discovers that Hitagi weighs next to nothing, a physical contradiction.
Despite being threatened by her, Araragi offers his help and introduces her to Meme Oshino, an eccentric middle-aged man living in an abandoned building who helped him stop being a vampire.
As the series progresses, Koyomi helps other girls, each affected by an “eccentricity.” To take care of the eccentricities, Koyomi relies on the expertise of Oshino at first, and later, Shinobu, the same vampire who attacked him, now in the guise of an 8-year-old girl.
Most heroines possess an item that symbolizes the entity they must deal with, such as Hitagi’s stapler (the pincer of a crab), Mayoi’s backpack (the shell of a snail), Suruga’s arm (the arm of a monkey), Nadeko’s cap and jacket (the head and skin of a snake), and Karen’s black and yellow tracksuit (the colors of a bee).
Despite containing elements of fantasy, horror, and action, the series focuses mainly on the conversations between its characters, which include parodies of other series and the traditional wordplay and meta-humor characteristic of Nisio Isin.
