Mulan is a young Chinese woman who, after seeing that her father -already old and ill- is recruited by the army to fight against the Huns.
She decides to secretly take her father’s armor and sword, cut his hair, and pretend to be a man to take his place.
Without knowledge of hand-to-hand combat or the use of weapons -because she was brought up to be a wife- she makes her way among her fellow soldiers and stands out as the savior of China.
The narrative is also intertwined with songs, with the help of a small red dragon that acts as Mulan’s “spiritual guide”, and with a love relationship that blossoms between the young warrior and General Li Shang.
On the other hand, Hua Mulan was a legendary figure in ancient China who lived during the Northern Wei dynasty.
The story was initially described in a popular folk song called “Ballad of Mulan,” which has endured with the Chinese people.
The story goes that when her elderly father received an order to fight in the war, Mulan decided to join the army in his place.
In ancient China, armies consisted only of men, so Mulan disguised herself and fought on the battlefield. For many years, she endured military life without discovering her true gender.
She fought bravely in numerous battles to protect the border from invaders and won many military awards.
When she finished her service in the army, the emperor wanted to grant her a high-rank position in the court as a reward.
However, he gave up that benefit and asked to be allowed to return to his hometown.
Mulan returned, and her elderly parents and siblings received her warmly. After 12 years of hiding her true identity, she finally shed her soldier’s outfit and returned to wear her lady’s clothes.
Later, when she visited her fellow soldiers, they were shocked and surprised. Having won victory and glory, Mulan regained her femininity and warm family life, taking care of her parents and siblings.
