A typical feature of this species is the presence of tufts on the ears. The eyes are frontal and surrounded by two dark circles, cut by a light strip in the middle. The pupils are orange.
The eyes cannot make a rotation movement, being fixed. So when the owl has to turn, it rotates its head directly, creating a trend of 270 degrees. But don’t be fooled, for its eyesight is excellent even at night, as is its hearing, very fine.
The body covered with feathers has various shades: neck, head, and upper part of the wings are brown, with darker spots. The rest of the body, in the lower leg, is paler, from brown to ochre yellow, with more colored stripes.
These shades help the owl camouflage in the trees’ hollow, where it spends its days.
The owl adapts to various climates and contexts. We find it all over Europe, but also in some parts of Asia and North America.
It prefers coniferous woods and countryside, but it is not uncommon to find them also on road signs or in other places contaminated by man’s presence.
It is not a solitary animal; on the contrary, it gathers in small groups during the night, especially in winter.
We are talking about a nocturnal animal that goes hunting for its prey after dark while it spends the daytime sleeping.
To sleep, it hides in the hollows of the logs, where it manages to camouflage itself well, escaping the eye of its enemies.
This bird is carnivorous and feeds mainly on insects, other birds, snakes, and rodents. In some cases, if the owl is large enough, it can also grab larger animals, such as the hare.
Its technique is excellent: it glides silently over its prey, then grabs it with its claws, and finally stuns it with its beak. The victim is not chewed but swallowed whole.
