The Romans created circuses in which hundreds of thousands of animals (lions, tigers, rhinoceroses, elephants, bears) were forced to fight together or against gladiators. 

These events took place in a theater occupied by decor to recall the animals’ natural environment. 

These demonstrations were quickly interrupted following the protests of the crowd moved by these bloody games.

The menageries, owned by monarchs and wealthy aristocrats, are considered the precursors of modern zoos.

Their sole function was to keep exotic species in captivity to entertain high-ranking visitors and to glorify authority. 

At that time, wild animals brought back from exotic lands were scarce and expensive. Unfortunately, the lack of knowledge about their way of life caused a high mortality rate, hence the need to renew their importation frequently.
